Cafe Amelie, New Orleans

Cafe Amelie, a cute little cafe in the French Quarter, has been on my 'must try' list for a while now. Set amongst the art galleries and antique shops of Royal Street, it is a beautiful little spot ... a bit different from most other cafes in the Quarter. For starters, between the entry on Royal Street and the main restaurant lies a large courtyard sprinkled with wrought iron tables, park benches, fountains and tons of vine & flowering plants where you can dine if you'd like. We opted to dine inside as it was a bit chilly coupled with the fact that I was just plain curious to see what the restaurant looked like inside. Super cute & quaint, with about 8 tables and a golden plush chaise lounge in the corner to boot ... my kind of place!

We started with cocktails - fresh squeezed OJ + vodka for Chad, a spicy bloody mary for me, and bubbly champagne for our friend Kris. Mmm, we were off to a good start. I ordered the Amelie salad & crab cakes. The salad was a perfect portion of cool mixed greens, red grapes, fresh chunks of blue cheese, sweet candied walnuts and tart green apples. And the crab cake was pretty darn good too ... seasoned nicely, with large pieces of fresh crab set on top of citrus greens. Chad & Kris both had the chicken & andouille gumbo. I stole a bite or two from Chad, and it was pretty tasty.

Cafe Amelie has been voted Best Brunch for a couple of years in row. With such lovely ambiance, friendly service, and menu items like sweet potato waffles, we know why. If you come for nothing more than to pop in and enjoy a cocktail & the ambiance, you must.
