Weekend Getaways | Memphis

Monday, April 05, 2010

I love weekend getaways, and especially love road trips. So one of the first things I did when we moved back to Louisiana was prop myself in front of our life-size map of the U.S. {no seriously, it's hanging in our living room} and I started plotting out all of the great cities in the eastern half of the country that I wanted to visit. Between Chad & I, we quickly came up with a list of spots neither of us had ever been to. First on the list- Memphis, Tennessee! A 6hr drive from New Orleans straight up through Mississippi.

We did the obligatory touristy things, like visiting Elvis' house and visiting Beale Street- two 'musts' on any trip to Memphis really. But we were also on a quest to find the best BBQ. After sampling several spots, we finally found the golden ticket- The Bar-B-Que Shop on Madison Avenue. A close 2nd & 3rd are Pig on Beale Street and Central BBQ on Central Avenue, respectively. We spent the rest of the weekend checking out the local food scene, listening to live music, sight-seeing and relaxing, which was precisely our intent. If you're looking for a nice weekend away, a place with good food, good music and not too far from home, look into Memphis.

Here are some recommendations for you while you're there-
Where to Stay :: Talbot Heirs Guesthouse
Where to go for BBQ :: The Bar-B-Que Shop
Where to go for Breakfast :: Arcade
Where to go to Relax :: Gould's Spa in The Peabody Hotel
What Not to Miss :: The Duck March @ The Peabody Hotel, daily at 11am & 5pm

Oftentimes the best part about a road trip is all that you find along the way-
Jackson, Mississippi :: Walker's Drive-In. A 1940's former drive-in, and one of the best restaurants in Jackson.
Oxford, Mississippi :: About 30 miles east of I-55, and home of the stunning Ol' Miss campus.
Hernando, Mississippi :: Velvet Cream. Over 300 flavors of home-made ice cream, plus great burgers & fried pickles.

Check back every now and again for more on our weekend getaways. Until then, safe travels & happy planning!
