Restore Our Gulf | Exhibit & Tshirts

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

It all started one Saturday afternoon, after seeing so much devastation surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. I wanted to do something to help, but knew that I couldn't be on the ground 24/7. A friend sent me info on a call for entries to an international poster project to raise funds for the clean-up. So I decided to enter. I wanted to generate a hopeful and personal message - something different than what was being portrayed in the news. I came up a simple slogan, "Restore Our Gulf, Preserve My Heritage." I think it conveys a message that also relates to hurricane recovery, coastal erosion, offshore drilling, our seafood industry, and the overall ecological, economic and cultural preservation of our entire region. I included a faded profile of a pelican to the design, and clicked 'submit.' Oftentimes what I think is beautiful, and what other people think is beautiful are two completely different animals, so I figured that would be last I'd see of that design.

My poster was selected as one of 42 from around the world to showcase in a traveling exhibit. Opening show will be at Bricks & Bombs Gallery in Baton Rouge August 6-7. The second showing will be in Lafayette at the Acadiana Center for the Arts from August 14 - September 4. Posters are being sold for $20, and all proceeds will go to Gulf Aid Acadiana, a community response to the aftermath of the oil leak disaster whose mission is to assist in the restoration of coastal Louisiana. Click here to see the selected pieces & for info on upcoming exhibits.

And after repeated requests for the design on t-shirts, I decided to go for it! 50% of my profit is going to Gulf Aid Acadiana & the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund. The United Way Gulf Recovery Fund provides emergency assistance, such as food, rent and utilities, and supports long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives devastated by this disaster. If you'd like to learn more about these wonderful foundations, please visit them online here & here.
