Mini-Guide | Vienna, Austria

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Vienna is lovely. It's soft and elegant. It's filled with natural beauty, in the people and the architecture. It's the place for girls' trips, tea houses, and boutique shopping. It's the place for romantics, strolling through serene Heuriger and then settling in to one of the wine taverns for a meal under the vines. It's the place for lovers of history and the opera, the arts and the theater. It's the place for leisurely visits to famed coffee houses, and hours of people-watching.

It's a place that was familiar though I had never been. It was seven different shades of white and all of it grand. And for me personally, it was also a hindsight kind of place because I fell in love with Vienna in hindsight. After returning home and browsing photos and my journal I learned way more about Vienna than I did when I was there. Hindsight. So if I'm ever lucky enough to return, I'd love to go back with good girlfriends, because some places are truly meant to be enjoyed that way. And Vienna is one of them.

Stay: Hotel Konig von Ungurn, Schulerstra├če 10
Sip: coffee from one of the many sidewalk cafes near the Stephansdom
Eat: on the patio at Haas and Haas
Eat some more: on the roof top balcony at Do & Co
See: the Gothic cathedral, Stephansdom
and then walk a few blocks to see the much smaller, but no less fascinating, St Peter Church
Skip: Karntnerstra├če and walk around the side streets instead
Do: visit the wine growing communities & wine taverns on the outskirts of town, I recommend Mayer am Pfarrplatz
And, as lovely as Vienna was, we found Vienna's people to be more so.
