1-Piece Swimsuits | my Top 5

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

We received a gracious invite to join friends down in Mexico in March. After we said yes, I began to agonize over the swimsuit. Because quite frankly, the past few years have found me in no sort of exercise routine and also completely out of the sun. So while shopping for a swimsuit this weekend, it was all about making the slightly flabby & cream-colored skin look chic. It happened, here's how:

I embraced the one-piece.

By properly covering what most of us are concerned about - the almighty mid-section - the eye is naturally drawn up to the top and face, rather than the middle of you. Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding! I felt as if I had discovered something so great- Because I finally, in a long time, felt confident in a swimsuit. I know many women share the same insecurities so I couldn't wait to get home and pull this post together, sharing my new-found tip. So without further adieu, I present to you some one-piece inspiration,

(1) Shirring works brilliantly on a swimsuit. It literally slims everything while also hiding any unflattering bits. I picked this grey stunner from Target for the color, shirring, boy-cut bottoms, strapless design, and price point. For only $35 it also has removable straps for those with a larger bust. For us itty-bittys, can't emphasize enough how flattering the cross-over bust line is.

(2) I love the nod to Farrah with this one, it's also my favorite of the bunch. Here's that shirring again, this time only on the sides where most of us are wanting some camouflage anyway. This "Manhattan" suit by Kelly B Couture is less glamour, and way more hippie. Made with organic cotton, this eco-friendly suit comes in red, black, and purple tie-dye and can be bought here for $115.

(3) Love the flirtiness of this Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, with its abstract hearts and turquoise / coral color combination. With ties at the neck & back, plus the single band keeping the triangles together, this little number is hot, hot. And for $110, not a bad buy either.

(4) I can attest to this one's greatness, I have it. The strap is removable, and I actually prefer it without. The fabric color is stunning against a paler skin tone. It's casual, yet the gold ring gives it a little something extra. Did I mention the price? $35 at Target.

(5) No swimsuit list would be complete without JCrew. They do swim impeccably. Similar to the piece in #1 with the shirring, this swimsuit has the added one-shoulder design and extra coverage. Perfect for small frames as well as full-figured gals. In classic black for $118.

Don't be afraid of the one-piece ladies. I've found them to be comfortable, flattering on just about any figure, and immensely elegant. Go ahead, you'll never know unless you try it,
