Destination Tropics | Muumuus & Kaftans

Monday, March 19, 2012

Muumuus & kaftans have been worn around the world for centuries. They're classy, elegant, and effortless. I don't have collections of bags, shoes, and jewelry, but muumuus & kaftans? I have a pretty impressive collection there.

Muumuus you may ask? Yes, muumuus. My favorite being one that I found at a market in Vancouver several years ago. A vintage billowy number with a square neckline & cap sleeves, perfection. I also have quite a few short, long, and mid-length kaftans. Kaftans over jeans, leggings, bare legs. Flops, heels, boots. I love the versatility of a loose fitting garment like a muumuu or kaftan because it can flatter almost anyone when worn to fit one's own figure. Linen or a soft cotton, they're ideal attire when in tropical destinations ... like right here in South Louisiana! I don't know about you but when it's 96 degrees out the last thing I want are a pair of sticky tight shorts. Plus my legs are too white for all that. Give me a flowing kaftan any day of the week, or time of year.

I've rounded up a few for your viewing pleasure, and hopefully a bit of inspiration when packing for your next tropical trip. They roll up well in your one tiny bag, plus you can use them as a coverup as well,

So what do you think about the muumuu & kaftan. Versatile or only for a select few body types? I want to know,

  1. Loved this article. Muumuus don't get hardly any love. Loved your kaftan picks.

  2. agreed Diana, about muumuus not getting their deserved spotlight. i think it's the word itself that carries an elderly connotation :) but i myself love them regardless. i just think they're so elegant & effortless, and very unexpected.
