Le Bon Temps Roule | Tchefuncte River, LA

Monday, May 14, 2012

The Tchefuncte River, snaking through Madisonville & Covington to eventually drain into Lake Pontchartrain, is one of the most scenic waterways in Louisiana. It's truly lovely. Recently I had the opportunity to attend a Tchefuncte River Cruise aboard an historic teak yacht aptly called 'Le Bon Temps Roule'. The yacht was christened in Florida in 1930. Nearly 70 years later it was donated by the Monteleone Family to FMB Investments - a non-profit that takes all proceeds from the charters and divvies it up in the form of grants to local charities. Brilliant idea. The yacht has been stunningly restored - no detail left unnoticed.

The weather was beautiful, the company was wonderful. So I kicked off my flops, sat back to enjoy cold wine & hors d'oeuvres, and visit with colleagues. Here are some photos from that afternoon.

Images, are mine

I wandered off by myself to scope out the underbelly of the boat. Carefully navigating the steep stairs, looking around to make sure I wouldn't get in trouble, I found the kitchen. And the slight sweet smell of diesel fuel took me straight back to my childhood .. summers spent in the Kemah, TX harbor with my grandparents aboard their sailboat. I tried to capture that moment, but some things just can't be translated via photographs.
