At Home | Alternatives to the Boob Light

Monday, August 20, 2012

It's the details that make a room, and home, memorable and lovely. As we continue to remodel our house, I'm constantly trying to strike a balance between "It's ok to install something vanilla there..." and "...but this space here requires a little bit more time and money..."

My current quest is to replace the boob lights (ie, contractor grade flush-mounts) that are everywhere in this house. We have 8-ft ceilings, so I can understand why they're there - they allow people to walk through the space without bumping their heads on the fixture, and they're really cheap ($15 +/-). There's actually nothing wrong with boob lights. They're functional and they've come a long way in the past 30 years in the way of design. But at the end of the day, it's still a boob light. For the bedrooms, I'm not concerned with finding something that doesn't hang low because a lower-hanging chandelier works really well over a bed. It's the office, mudroom, and halls that I'm talking about here. So if you're in a similar spot with short ceilings and find yourself wanting to still make a statement with lighting - you can. And I've done some of the research for you, below are 6 of my favorites around the web! Happy Monday friends.
